Of course, I'm talking about Genesis 19, or the story of Lot and the smiting of Sodom and Gomorrah. It's no surprise that the sexiest story in the Good Book has received unprecedented attention since the advent of the Internet. Re-tellings so litter the Series of Tubes, in fact, that I felt it was important to distinguish the good from the bad; the righteous from the heretical...or, at least, the interesting from the dull.
Thus, I bring you the definitive list of Sodom and Gomorrah webtales. I recommend you click with abandon: these stories are all well worth your time.
The Brick Testament: Sodom and Gomorrah, and Lot's Seduction.
This is a great visual interpretation of the story in elaborate Lego brick dioramas. It follows the text of the New Jerusalem Bible. It is by far the most accurate Biblical retelling.
The Children's Bible Story of Sodom and Gomorrah.
"God loves us so much. And he has filled the world with wonderful things so we can know how good he is." This rendition from the Children's Bible of self-proclaimed cancer adventurer Paul Dallgas-Frey is a sort of stuffed-bunny version of Genesis 19. It hits on most of the important points: the Sodomites did bad things. God sends two angels to scope out Sodom. The angels report back to the Big Guy that he should put the city on the nix list. Lot and his family are spared from a fiery ruin, but his wife is turned into a pillar of salt. The story does gloss over how Lot and his two virgin daughters repopulate the desert but, I mean, it's for kids.
Professor Brothers Lecture on Genesis 19. This is a Flash video lecture from Brad Neely's famous Professor Brother, Dr. Frank. This is an appropriately frank and academically sound history of the Sodom and Gomorrah yarn, but it is not for kids.
Sodom and Gomorrah: The Movie.
Here you will find the trailers for an upcoming independent parable about a man who leaves his family for his gay lover after discovering that he, himself, is gay. While this story is not a literal recitation of Genesis 19, it touches on perhaps the most important point from the Biblical legend: being gay hurts everyone you've ever known.
The Real Sodom and Gomorrah Found!
No, I don't mean San Francisco. This is a cool little site that attempts to locate the real-life cities of sin. It triangulates the area based on the positions of Zoar, the Plain of Jordan, and the Dead Sea.
