A friend of mine once told me that by the time the DJ broke "Don't You (Forget About Me)" at the local Ladies 80s hebdomad, he would have already found a dark corner for a choice girl. "When I hear Simple Minds," he mused, "it just makes me wanna make out."
When I think about setting my makeout sessions to music, I cringe a little. It looks great on screen, but in real life it seems so corny! I'll be damned if I don't weep like Niagara Falls every time Patrick and Demi lock trans-infinitudinal lips to "Unchained Melody" in Ghost, but hell, how can I live up to that? I used to make out to Vespertine, but since I found out it's about Björk's daughter it's lost...well, all of its sex appeal, frankly.
I'm no stranger to "acousticophilia" (thanks, Celestina!). If music can push my buttons, it can certainly push yours.
So, riddle me this, Newsvine: what sexytune§ floats your boat? What balmy ballad tugs at your heartstrings? If you were locked in a room with someone you really despised, what piece of music would get you in the mood?
Bolero!
Afghan Whigs! 1965 is a playful and flirty album, and Greg Dulli usually has me ready to go.
There's a few Van Morrison tunes as well. Maybe that's cliché, but come on. "I wanna rock your gypsy soul" is a good line.
I'm sure there's more, but that's just off the top of my head.
I was going to toss some Van Morrison in there too...Doesn't really matter which song. Just put on some Van and get busy.
I know its newer, but Marc Broussard's The Beauty of Who You Are is amazing!
You should go to Amazon and check it out! As for the newness, from the songs mentioned and the article title, I was thinking older songs/music.
Lollipop by Mika!
...
...what? :-P
Seriously though, what kind of question? I mean there are many different kinds of making out, right? Are we talking frantic horny MIA style with dirty lyrics and a pulse you can feel or are we talking playful laid back Brilliant Green style with casual conversation and understood affection? Dramatic and Soulful making out a la Antony and the Johnsons? Hot three-way makeout action with PJ Harvey in the background being somehow sensuous and excited? How are you playing this?
It's all too much for a boy to think about, now that I think about it...
I'll bite
Are you sure he's into that?
Wait, are we still talking about making out?
Are you offering? ;-)
I'm leanings towards something instrumental maybe. Why let awkward lyrics get in the way.
I'm leanings towards something instrumental maybe.
Kenny G fan?
Kenny G fan?
Instrumental doesn't mean bad :-)
Nope, simple minds don't make me want to make out. I prefer intelligent women.
It's all about the moment, different music for different situations. Instrumentals, classics are good when you want to actually talk before and after. Various pop rock songs are good for more spontaneous spur of the moment fun. Some hard rock songs like one in particular from NIN when subtly just doesn't cut it that also works well in conjunction with a particular song from Ginuwine (if you are male) but I wouldn't recommend either of these until you are fairly sure the other person is thinking what you are!
For a subtle flair to a evening of discourse where you are going to be or plan to be talking for awhile like say a train ride private car, over for drinks and conversation, unwinding in a group talking about the days goings on I'd suggest Lohengrin by Wagner. It's got the build up, very well recognized and amusing (in our context) pieces to probably surprise people, and some moving moments to make you want to do more than talk.
Rock songs really span most situations where you don't know each other like the club you mentioned before. Not only is it far more likely the DJ can and will play it but they are both more and less subtle and playful. Take the earlier given new years party I'd say Foxy Lady by Jimmy Hendrix - not subtle but funny if you play it right. If you are already close and think non-humorous cheesy would work I'll Be by Edwin McCain wouldn't go wrong. A slightly older one that nearly worked for me once was Juliana Hatfield's spin the bottle, being a nearly though isn't too good of a recommendation I suppose. That scenario was state fair, the spoiler being too close to the porta potties and realizing it too late to save the moment.
For hanging out with old acquaintances reminiscing I would suggest Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl. You can actually fit in just about any color eyes and not mess up the rhythm.
What an interesting article, well worth the read. Thanks! (Views edited to save and preserve the innocent!)
Well, Lovage's "Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By" is classic, it was made for it. As long as you happen to be turned on my music talking about dead people and threesomes and shipwrecks (totally works for me, anyway). Peter Gabriel's "Passion" always gets me, in a completely different way. And I think James Brown is pretty much self-explanatory.
...I really have to give you a copy of Still Life with Woodpecker...
*smile*
That does sound almost like she's quoting it, the whole thing might bore her...
Son of a preacher man, a good bit of the modest mouse tracks, crimson and clover, and most smashing pumpkins have all made the list for me.
Memory-association can do a lot. I have some very fond memories of "Son of a Preacher Man"...
Not a baptist thing, celestina's right tis a memory thing
Okay nothing was working for me at all until ... "Crimson and Clover" That goes right back to the first slow-dance.
:-) sigh
I have always found the song strangely erotic.
Do Simple Minds make you want to make out?
No. Not even slightly.
How 'bout:
"Wicked Game" - Chris Isaak
Yea, may have seen that video once or twice when I was a kid. I may or may not have taped it off VH1. Can't remember. I have no clue where I used to hide it in my top dresser drawer behind all my older report cards. No idea.
Actually, it took me ages to come around to that song.
The first time I heard the song was in the movie "Wild at Heart" (David Lynch.) It fit so well in the movie, used during the dead of night driving scenes...That movie made it popular, although it was released 2 years prior, so a video was finally made. That sealed the deal. That's a video that men and women alike call smokin'. Something for everyone.
Ha, nice. They played that on VH1? Woulda made my day back in the day...
It was also really sad. I love the last line.
It was also really sad. I love the last line.
I wonder role Helena Christiansen played in the writing of the song.
Oh, thank you very much for dredging up the one song I wish I didn't love, but can't help myself. It systematically sends me into tears, but that doesn't mean it doesn't turn me on. It just leaves me all conflicted, in a maybe-good-way, depending on who's in the room in the time (and whether I am going to regret sleeping with them later).
Ah, Myk. Shall we compose a list of desperately sad songs for people who are uncontrollably attracted to misfortune?
Why bother, we all have mix tapes with the lot of them....
Ah, Myk. Shall we compose a list of desperately sad songs for people who are uncontrollably attracted to misfortune?
I dunno yo I'm trying to cut back. I think I've had just about enough indulgence in self-pity for 2007, next playlist I make is going to be happy.
(...I know, weird, right?)
Eric Clapton: You look wonderful tonight
When I used to DJ that was a big one that was requested a lot. Some others were, Lady in Red, Kiss and Say Goodbye, Two out of Three Ain't Bad, Angel Eyes, Purple Rain - ok, guess now I'm showing my age! :)
If you were locked in a room with someone you really despised, what piece of music would get you in the mood?
Nothing but BEER! (and a Lot of it)
just roll with that like it's what you were going for, OK? ;)
Roll with it :)
Threads like this are interesting because they bring back memories. When I see the names of songs, or when I was thinking about your question I started thinking about different old girl friends and the songs they liked to ...... listen ...... to :)
Thanks David now I feel like an old cliche with that list of songs, but wait it gets worse. My eyes adored you by whoever. Thank God I do not know the artist.
Anything by Elliot Smith for some reason.
...did you mark that one on Celestina's survey, then? :-P
In college, it was a lot of sappy Dave Matthews and Sigur Ros. The worst would be setting iTunes (or WinAmp back then!) to shuffle, starting to make out to something appropriate, and then bam! You'd get hit with that ridiculous mainstream hip hop track you snagged off Napster for some reason.
From sensitivity to misogyny in one second. Buzzkill.
baka!
Any and every Bryan Adams song.
The last 6 months alone I've listened to over 200 of his songs at least 5,000 times. All day and all night. And I get really flustered when someone quotes lyrics from his songs or such-like.
I just did a quick tally in iTunes and the total came to 16,393 for a 6 month period. Only off by about 10,000 in my first estimate :o).
I prefer all his songs from the Room Service album for the more romantic moods - quite a few soft songs in there (Flying, This Side of Paradise, Not Romeo Not Juliet, Open Road, Room Service) and some nice beaty romantic story-like ones (Eastside Story, She's a Little to Good for Me) and some really slow ones with a romantic base (I Was Only Dreamin', Nowhere Fast and Why do you Have to be so Hard to Love.)
And yeah, I'm a flop for the romantic songs.
My favourite right now though would have to be Never Let Go from the Guardian soundtrack, followed by Room Service, Eastside Story, Right Back Where I Started From and The Best of Me. It's really hard to choose what one I love the most because I love them all so much :(
I'd go for Bryan Adams, too, Have You Really Ever Loved a Woman?
Now, to show my age: Joni Mitchell, I Could Drink a Case of You. Prince, Kiss. Roberta Flack, Killing Me Softly with His Song. For starters. I'm sure there's many more, but gotta go to work now. : )
Don't forget Joni Mitchell, another great Canadian musician, artist, talented beyond words.
Hmm. Apparently Bryan Adams is Canada's best export after all.
I though it was You! :)
You know, I have a book called, "Creating Melodies: A Songwriter's Guide to Understanding, Writing and Polishing Melodies" by Dick Wiessman. It's a relatively simple book and not definative in the realm of advanced music theory, but a concept brought up in the book discusses the idea that people are genetically predisposed to having affinity to certain sounds or kinds of sounds. That, when people hear these sounds it an trigger certain actions.
This however is in no way stating that Rap makes kids deal or do drugs. However I think what it was implying was that certain sounds or kinds of sound can effect someone in a way that a triggered emotion will alter a decision path.
Normally, I'd never consider hugging a carpet in my life - it just looks ridiculous. Throw in some [undisclosed substance] and a dirty bass line often found in something like a PMT or Luke Chable track / remix and theres not enough carpet for me TO hug - of course I think [undisclosed substance] played a substantial role in that affair, but still. Remove the bass line and while I was on [undisclosed substance] carpet hugging wouldn't even enter my mind (what little rational thinking and consciously active segments were left)
not for some time have I hugged the carpet... being a father sort of puts carpet hugging in a perspective that makes it all... minuscule on the fun factor. Admittedly, there are times where I reflect on it and wonder... maybe one more time... but I haven't because the risk doesn't justify the gain (secondly).
On a side note, to answer the article question...
On others, I've used -
Once, to be funny, I threw on Marvin Gaye and Barry White... it ended up not funny but effective in a cliched sort of way - can't complain
Mainly though, when I was free roaming I'd lure my prey in with power ballads like "Every Rose has its Thorn" despite that it was popular 10 years prior to me using it as bait. It said "I know a mainstream power ballad by a washed up artist like no other.
Guns and Roses "Patience" once, backfired on me... its funny now, but not funny then.. there wasn't enough cold water in the world that helped me that night.
For me personally
And finally... I sank really really low once and discovered that Sarah McLaughlin did something evil to me... I'm a sinner that was sinned against, I know, but I'm fine with it and so should you be also. Well, except that there is something about Sarah that still lingers with me. Maybe it's the placido triste in her voice or the sensual articulation in her words...
More recently, James Holden "Nothing (93 Returning Mix)" has made my mood 180 from negative to positive in way of sexual urges - and without carpet affinity inducing enhancers
Almost anything Prince...but I suppose thats an obvious choice. I also think Closer by NIN is a very sexy song...
(Who hasn't made out to Bon Jovi?)
I haven't and I've never been to a club where Bon Jovi was played...Of course if you're at a reggae club there's so much grinding and wining anyway...I don't supposed the Bon Jovi songs would be necessary. ;-)
You know what's up...
Funny thing about that, I might have dreads in a few months.
I guess we'll have to see this weekend. I think the appropriate question though is, can you?
She's OK.
I bet she's bad :-)
My wife and I saw "Ocean's Eleven" (Clooney et al version) on our first date. The scene near the end where the Philadelphia Orchestra is playing Clair de Lune is where we decided we should have a second date. :)
As far as fast tracks... I'd say "Everybody's Going to the Moon" by Jamiroquai.
Okay so then I remembered this one old Rolling Stones blues cover - called "I'm a King Bee". And I mean it's from old vinyl called "Englands Newest Hit-Makers, the Rolling Stones" ... that old. It's got this great dirty slide guitar thing and I found it for you on Youtube with a photomontage that reminds me of why I actually used to think Mick Jagger was hot.
Watch it and tell me - does Brian Jones look like Brian Ford to you?
I don't know if any music really makes me want to make out in particular. The closest would be the Pretty Hate Machine album by NIN - always makes me flash back to being in high school and making out with my first girlfriend.
VAST can make some interestingly evil @!$%#ing happen (fist album only). Particularly if you time it to "pretty when you cry"... I sent that to some stupid... girl when I found out she was cheating... and then pissed in her astringent.
Stabbing Westward is a good 'grudge @!$%#' band... or if you want to have someone literally eat your face during a make out session...
I always liked things like ministry for the grudge @!$%#.
ministry for the grudge @!$%#.
um... GRUDGE @!$%#, not SKULL @!$%#. but since you bring it up... Kitty and Otep are good for poking the ol eye out , as it were.
Then again.. "Say You're Sorry" can go either way with that
"Black" Pearl Jam
"Come Down" Bush
"Hungry" Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder
