Newsvine Audio and meme for you!

From Will Curtiss' website.

advertisement

A couple of weeks ago, Vinebot told us about a schmancy experimental audio posting tool and asked users if they were interested in drumming up some sound-y interviews. Viki Babbles was our first taker.

We here at Newsvine are scattered to the four winds, but we manage to connect every day through text and through pictures. Now, at the cusp of audio integration, we have the opportunity to connect in a more visceral way. Here's the gist:

You record a sound, rendered as an .mp3, using whatever tools you have at your disposal, and email it to staffer Mark along with a URL to an unpublished article that will contain the sound. If your computer doesn't have audio capture capabilities, or if you want to record a sound on the fly, you can dial up the Microsoft Mobile recording service (more on this below) and use the mouthpiece of your phone as a mic. This file is sent directly to Newsvine.

Whew! Right. As it stands, the system is clunky and a little bit confusing, so to help us get familiar with the process of publishing audio to Newsvine, I propose a little game.

I've posted a mystery sound to this very article to get things rolling. The first person to correctly guess the origin of the sound should follow the instructions below. Also, if you're so inclined, please feel free to start your own meme.

The Steps

1. Record a sound. You can do this a couple of ways:

Use sound recording software on your computer (like Garage Band for Mac or Sound Recorder for Windows). Make sure your software can render the sound file as an .mp3.

Or use the Microsoft Mobile recording service provided through Newsvine. This is easy: dial the number , key in the extension, and record your sound after the prompt. This sound is emailed directly to Newsvine.
To use Microsoft Mobile's service, dial: 415-332-6955, X449

2. Create an article to correspond with your sound and be sure to save it as Unpublished.

3. Email the URL of your unpublished article to Mark. If you recorded an .mp3, make sure to email the file as an attachment along with that URL.

3. Mark will reply to your email when he's attached the audio to your article. At this point, your piece should be ready to publish, audio included.

The Rules

1. Record a sound using either method described above.

2. Draft an article to correspond with that sound, including "Guess Me!" in the title and your geographic location in the body. This article should also contain the steps for recording and rules of the game. (Alternately, you may link back to this article for directions on how to record audio to Newsvine.)

3. Email Mark, taking care to follow the steps described above. Again, if you have already rendered an .mp3, attach it to this email. When he gets back to you, publish your article.

4. The first person to correctly identify your sound is the winner, and repeats the process above.

Caveats (please read!)

Because of rights restrictions, please do not send audio of copyrighted content like songs or movies. The last thing Newsvine needs is fisticuffs with the RIAA. Also, please keep it clean, folks. Forays into the flatulent or scatological need not apply, and amateur audio erotica is for EVine only.

Revision: the higher-ups requested that articles tagged mobile-posts be published to All of Newsvine. Please adjust your publications accordingly. Thanks!

Right! That's it. You've got a new toy, Newsvine. Now, go play!

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This seems really convoluted.

system for yourself. Viral memes FTW! It's not as bad as it seems, but you think anything is convoluted if you're not at the helm. :P

Myk won? What a surprise. What'd he win? Wait, I don't want to know.

This is just what I needed, a primer. Clipped to Newsviner's Picks and my column. Will tinker with this stuff this weekend.

Here's what I'd love to do is when I do an interview with a band or artist to be able to incorporate samples of songs and/or maybe the singer answering some of the questions into the interview. I have one interview in the works where the singer doesnt type and I might be able to get more answers if we can just record him. If we get permission from him and the label are those kinds of things doable?

Wouldn't it have been cool to have been able to listen to Hawaiin music when reading my Hawaiin music interview? I'm excited about this stuff but really dense about it.

As I understand it, as long as you have permission to use the sound, you're good to go. The only reason I discourage using songs in this article is precisely because we don't have licenses for this sort of stuff.

Incidentally, an old friend and former bandmate of mine is releasing his album at the end of the month, and has two singles almost at the ready for a preview. I'm planning on posting them to my column using the MM engine.

Thanks for the response. I just emailed the publicist for the artist a copy of your link and asked her to swing over here so if you see someone new named Heather just wave and tell her you live Bloodshot Records.

Alt-country is actually pretty big in Canada. Or at least, there's a good amount of it coming from Canada these days.

To get even more detailed, I'm guessing an older-style chisel tip marker, as oppossed to a Sharpie.

To answer your question, no, I can't do that unless I am on Newsvine 25 hours a day. So, no, I won't ask that of every article. Only articles that look kinda suspicious. I am especially wary of memes.
