You always knew it would come to this.

Advertise | AdChoices

Ryan and Myk cordially invite you to tear the roof of their shiny 750-square-foot sucka (plus balcony!) on Friday the 16th of May in the year 2008.

Yep, it's time for yet another Columbus Vinemeet, and this time Myk and I will be hosting in our tiny-but-fabulous one-bedroom condo. Beers and barbecue and deep discussions about controversial meta matters. Please come! We're counting on you to help us christen the place.

Lodging

First Come, First Served

Our Apartment: Room for 9*
We have one pull-out couch that can sleep two and a full-sized air bed. We can probably sleep an additional four or five people around the floor.

The Guest Suite: Room for 8*
For a mere $35 nightly, you can sleep in the luxurious efficiency conveniently located 20 feet from my condo. There is a pull-out couch that (probably) sleeps two and two twin beds, and maybe three or four sleeping bag spots if you're crafty.

Katy Baxter's New House: Room for 10*
Katy says she's got a futon that sleeps two and room for six to eight more who don't mind sacking on the floor.

*Note: these are generous estimates.

Hotels

I live in the damn suburbs, so any hotel is going to be a bit of a drive. The nearest hotel is the Hyatt Place Dublin-Columbus. Here are directions from our place.

Specialties!

I'll cook breakfast for anyone staying in our apartment or at the guest suite across the way, as well as anyone who can mosey on over early enough. I'd also like to do some barbecuing if weather permits (we have a sweet little hibachi that's aching for action!) Please put in your bids for what you'd like me to prepare and, if you can spare it, pitch in $5 for supplies. We're broke as the COTA bus, you know.

Things to Consider

Taxis are unreliable unless you're going to or coming from the airport and public transportation is a joke. (Seriously.) If you're not staying with us or with Katy Baxter, consider splitting the cost on a rental car and designate a driver to get you to your beds after we've done did it up.

If you're flying in, we can pick you up from CMH. Please give us advance notice of your flight times (Kymlee, Calvin), since we'd like not to have to make more than one trip.

I'm trying to book a show with my band for this same weekend. If you're terribly disinterested in seeing the Flotation Walls, please let me know now. Also know that this show will probably be 21+, so if you need a new ID Bilokonskys please secure one before you make the drive. :)

Right Now: Please check in on the comment thread below and indicate whether you're coming, and let us know where you'll be staying. Oh, and remember to pack extra undies and socks, and bring a sweater, you don't want to catch cold!

Right! Jerry, will you be back from Texas in time for the party?

JUST SO THERE IS NO CONFUSION, THIS EVENT BEGINS ON THE 16TH OF MAY! Kthx. (^_^)

I will be driving, so anyone who'd like a ride from the Chicago area (LAUHAL, I'M LOOKING AT YOU), shoot me an email. Obviously, then, I'll have my car and can ferry people between the S-S-B condo and the hotel.

How long is the drive between Chicago and Columbus?

It takes me eight hours to drive to Chicago from Minneapolis, which I could do by myself. I doubt I could make it all the way to Columbus though!

Hey, I've got enough confidence in my masculinity (alcoholism?) that I can be comfortable drinking something with an umbrella in it.

I'm rightfully famous for the quality of my Bourbon Sours, even though the lemon juice makes them a little bit girly.

Mint julep? Sure, sounds like something Scarlettt O'Hara would sip on a hot Atlanta's-burning evening, but quite thirst-quenching, and the mint aids digestion.

Now, a Cosmopolitan might be a little too Sex and the City, but the similarly named Manhattan, since it contains rye whisky, gets an automatic allotment of testosterone points.

There are few things with more girly associations than blender drinks. But I've travelled all over the Caribbean in the last 15 years, so I can perhaps be forgiven if I have acquired a taste for drinks like the Dirty Banana and the Bushwhacker (note the contents of this Virgin Islands fave, though. Heh. The only mix is nutmeg and ice).

The cocktail I'm planning for copious consumption at this Vinemeet, though, is my contribution to international relations, the legendary Canadian cocktail, the Bloody Caesar. Again, it could be argued that this kind of drink carries, er, feminine connotations, but I can assure you that -- not only is it a refreshing spicy beverage -- a few of these will knock you on your toga.

So, I guess what I'm saying (and of course, no defensiveness here) is that if girly drinks like these mean that I'm a lightweight, then hell, I'll start mixing Shirley Temples. But I'd really want to hold out for at least a Dirty Shirley.

You couldn't have our man-love even if you [insert something slightly wild... but not too wild].

Now, a Cosmopolitan might be a little too Sex and the City, but the similarly named Manhattan, since it contains rye whisky, gets an automatic allotment of testosterone points.

I am also a fan of the Manhattan, both the place and the drink.

I've also been known to fancy a summer Mojito, a classic margarita, and the occasional lemon drop martini (why does citrus automagically make things girly?), but usually, I stick with shots, Jack & coke, Soco lime, dirty vodka martinis, Screwdrivers, and Bloody Marys (and these usually only if someone makes them for me).

I'm a simple man. Lazy, too.

Yeah, see, this is the problem. I'm supposed to have the dubious honor of being graced with your "add a little more sugar" man-love, all the while trying to interpret what might qualify as "not too wild"? Forgive me if I just sit in the corner and do crossword puzzles while emptying the bottle.

I'm a simple man. Lazy, too.

This, however, I have to commend you upon. It's the secret to all serious drinkers. Who the hell can be bothered to get up and mix a bunch of disparate ingredients up in a blender when there is a perfectly good bottle already in arm's reach?

all the while trying to interpret what might qualify as "not too wild"?

That's really just an invitation for you to test precisely what brings out the sharing of man-love. No control variables for this experiment, by the way.

Who the hell can be bothered to get up and mix a bunch of disparate ingredients up in a blender when there is a perfectly good bottle already in arm's reach?

Why do you think I have a bar stool in front of the fridge?

      Blenders are for pussies.

That beats my other plan of the Greyhound, which ended up taking 18 or so hours when I went to Columbus last time. Ryan said it is about a 7 hour drive if I recall correctly. Tomorrow I'll send you an email and we can figure this out.

But if at the Church they would give us some Ale,

But I posted a thread in Vinemeet about having another Vinemeet West. Thought, if no one objected, we could move it up the coast to closer to me. :D I have a HUGE house. (2000 sq feet, 4 bedrooms and multiple baths.) No cable though. So we would have to find something to do besides watching TV.

I can help out with transportation, too. Just let me know when and where.

If it ends up being decent grilling weather, we can bring meat and charcoal and those fun things. I won't promise a great breakfast the next morning if you bunk at my place, but I do promise hot cinnamon rolls and cold bowls of cheerios, plus ample orange juice and coffee. I'm like McDonalds, only I don't spit in your food.

SLIGHT change of plans on my behalf.
The mgmt at that location tried to switch and bait about four different things (deposit, rent, water fee, pets...) and so we told them to stick it up their ass.
Luckily, though, we've found an even bigger place (for a lower price!!). It's right off Riverside Drive. So I can definitely still take anyone that needs to crash as stowaways, and I'll have even more room now, including a basement.
So in total - one large couch, one futon, and one airbed - plus three large rooms with plenty of floorspace.

I can't come because I can't afford it and I really, really don't like to fly. I have some sort of agoraphobia or something. I'm terrified of being alone in strange places. You guys have no idea how amazing it was I was able to get down Fawnskin. LOL And did I mention I don't like to fly? I would say I wouldn't fly even for my own mom's funeral but chances are I would give her funeral a pass if I were living next door to her. ::sigh::

But you can make folks "disappear"? Hmmm, let me get back to you.

I have the opposite of that. Agoraphilia? Hmm. Getting off in strange places? That's not quite it...or maybe it is...

She doesn't even want kids! She'll be taking money out of her beer fund if anything. Which could be a double edged sword. Can you take alcohal on an airplane? I'll have to inquire about this as I might want to bring along a growler of Long Board Brown from our favorite local brewery.

What? Oh...yeah, I can do whiskey...I just don't like it cheap.

I drink Jameson on the cheap and single malts otherwise. I don't drink bourbon without a mixer.

Vodka is tasteless in the same way that oil is tasteless. The cheaper it is, the harsher it is, and it lingers on your palate like McDonald's ground chuck. I'll drink it in a very dirty martini if I have to.

It wasn't until halfway through the first game that we realized that we probably shouldn't have poured double shots in a two-vs-two game, because beer and rum don't have similar proofs.

Depends on the vodka. I remember having a friend of mine who lives on scotch try a shot of Absolut and a shot of Ketel One -- he was amazed that there could be so much variety in bland, bland vodka. :-p

Of course, I didn't give him Popov. That would've probably made him slap me.

I'll drink it in a very dirty martini if I have to.

Rum is for teenage girls on the jagged cusp of pregnancy.
I'm sorry Celestina but you've married a bra wearing homosexual lesbian woman. Who is also a little girl with pigtails. And pink bows. Missing her 2 front teeth, covered in freckles and wearing a brand new dress because he just had to have a nice new dress for spring. Knee socks!

Vodka is good only good for killing unwanted houseplants or washing tyres.

I can slam whiskey, or I can sip it. That said it's Irish sipping, so that's...
half a shot a sip, 1/3 if you're lucky. Whiskey is an aquired taste, so aquire it.

And James Bond is a relic of impotent British cock waving imperialism. A vodkatini is a bastardization of a martini, which is the only true "tini".

.... I may sound like a ponce but I'm not above drinking a jagershock.
That'd be one shot of jagermiester and one shot of blue aftershock, down in one.

I've been drinking vodka in one way, shape or form for more than 30 years, and while I can choke down Absolut if I have to, these days I pretty much always opt for Stoli: affordable, still pretty damn good, and hey, it's Russian.

For rum, Appleton's Special Estate Reserve dark rum. If that's for pussies, I'll join Stacey as part of the club.

Jameson's works for whiskey on the cheap, just as Ryan says. If I've got a couple extra bucks, Highland Park single malt is awesome, and if I've got a couple extra more and I'm feeling feisty, Lagavulin works pretty good, too.

For rye whiskey, it's tough to beat a good Canadian rye. You can pick either Crown Royal or Gibsons, but I prefer the 16 year old Gibson Silver edition. And like Dave, I'll slam it, sip it, or even drink it in a mixed drink if you really really force me.

Then there's Wild Turkey bourbon and Sauza Gold tequila (which will work if there's no mescal available). But for god's sake, if anybody brings out that godforsaken Akvavit? I'm running for the bathroom.

You're one of those crazy people who do 3:2 vodka-brine, aren't you?

Come on, Jack. It's like 3:1 with a vermouth rinse. Oh, and, there's no room for rum-pong, but have you ever played checkers?

I'll only drink Irish Whiskey theses days. But Johnny Jump-Ups are teh evil.

Ahh, my kinda girl! Stacy, now you've got to come out. ...to Vinemeet! TO--Vinemeet!

Knee socks!

Oh LOLz. It merits repeating (sorry Cel--but, I mean, knee socks).

I propose the first completely dry Vinemeet.

Not funny. I don't know whether to flag this as Inflammatory or No Value. But I suppose you'll make up for it with my Nan's drink of choice.

Admittedly, I like my dirty martinis with more than a splash. I don't really measure, but it's probably around 5:1. As for checkers, I haven't played the real game in... at least 10 years, so there's really no way in hell I'm going to play rum checkers. :-p

I've never had that. I shall have to partake. I just remember Philly Vinemeet's Crown Royal Tupperware shots. Those were rather unorthodox. If I decide to drive, I'll bring my shot glasses.

Yes, I so love the big words. Like Australopithecus. Adore that one. Or magnanimous, especially after a few drinks.
As to rum, however, I have drunk more than my share of it (after the whiskey runs out, and my husband is still only halfway through his bottle). It makes a nice dessert. *smile*

You don't wanna break your car? I'm about to do my second seven-hour drive this month...eeg...but I likes my car and it gets better mileage. DC here I come!!

By the way, I had a bizarre dream about riding on a train full of hipsters and Rush Limbaugh types overnight across the country. When we got to Montana (amazing mountain ranges there, apparently), this big Clancy Brown-type border officer made us all present ID at the window, and when the train started moving, he followed us comically on horse. When he couldn't catch up, he had his gumshoes flip a car behind us on the tracks to make it look like something absurd had stopped him from doing his job.

It was hilarious until some @!$%# stole my bunk.

Hey Jack, my initial choice of transportation apparently doesn't exist anymore, so maybe we should all consider a little car pool. I think Eric wouldn't mind a ride if one was offered either.

And when I say a little car pool, I don't mean in your extremely little car ;-)

A carpool from this neck of the woods would be much appreciated, and indeed would be the only way I'm going to make it there.

You don't wanna break your car?

More like I don't wanna spend 6-7 hours in the seat, and I'll be going to Ohio, where the po-po are apparently sadistic about speeding, so I won't be able to keep up my preferred highway speed of 88 mph.

Hehe, yeah. If we're gonna drive four adults (with luggage) who aren't employed by the circus, it won't be in my car. :-p

I did the Philly drive with Myk in 7 hours, and Ohio is only an hour and a half of your drive, two tops (if you have to go a measly 76). I did New York in 8 and a half (minus city driving).

Yes, the cops are big mother@!$%#ers in the OH, but if you know where to look for cops and are attentive, you won't have a problem cheating them. Besides, there are more than a handful of turnoffs that could save your ass $200. I've used that trick more than once.

With two other drivers at your side, it should be a fun and leisurely trip.

Well, I'm up around NYC now, so it'll probably be around 8 hours. Oy.

By this, you mean using a turnoff to lose a cop already on your tail? Or... what? I'm naive in the ways of police evasion.

Alright, that leaves Hob's car, which I pretty much assumed was what we were taking. It's comfy, and I like the dash layout.

Fair enough, but you guys still need to get down to me, because I ain't coming up to you and then driving another 8 hours ;-)

By the time of the Vinemeet, I'll either have quite a flexible schedule, or be swamped with work. It's somewhat in limbo right now. I'll let you know when I know. :-/

Ooooh, yeah, I don't think I've been on a highway that has such frequent turnoffs. Then again, I don't particularly notice a highway's Ease of Evasion Factor. ;-)

EEF is my primary consideration when selecting a highway. After route efficiency. If you know how to watch for speed traps, you'll be fine. If you don't, I've got pointers.

Do you have a fireplace? We can do another fire side sing along. If there's no fireplace it'll just be a sing along. :) If someone knows how to play the guitar, I could bring an acoustic one (kid size though) and then if Walt doesn't show up we won't be completely SOL. I'd recommend we avoid forcing everyone to tell stories. They'll all start of with "so I was drunk" or "so I was doing (insert drug here)." LOL

I have two acoustic, two electric and one bass guitar, so no shortage on instruments. Also, keys, fiddle and voice. But I need someone to jam with, I'm pretty useless by myself. All my songs start with "so I was drunk..."

I haven't played a real instrument in over a decade...but I can play the spoons and/or jugs like a pro (by which I mean drunken fool who stops caring that he can't keep a tune)

I cannot freakin' WAIT for this meet. It's gonna be like Columbus I x 2. As in, Columbus II, which is what it is.

                            Or even Columbus III.

Oh, don't you worry your pretty little self, Martin. I've purchased a new set of headphones/mic thing, after the sound debacle of my interview w/Kymlee, and I'll be walking around like an internet gaming dork/customer service representative, talking to you during the entire vinemeet on skype.

                            Be prepared.

                            Yeah, it's creepy.

It was creepy earlier, when I was telling my sister in law how I knew the people I'll be visiting in Asheville, NC tomorrow on my way home to Chicago from Florida (Celestina, Walt, Robin, Cassandra).

                            "Um, the internet?"

I wish I had a camera for the look on her face. I know the conversation that she will have with my brother tonight when they go to bed.

"Do you know that your sister is bringing her children to meet some people she met on the internet tomorrow?"

                            "Ha, ha, ha. WHAT? No..."

                            I'm creepy. I can't help it.

OK fine we really really are.

But you can't judge an entire...
                            You shouldn't....
...There is no way to word this at all. Well no way that doesn't involve a tapestry of lies...

                            AH!
No group, collective, organisation, government or conglomeration may use
"David Mc Girr" as any kind of moral, legal, social, or philosophical yard stick.
He in no way represents the Internet, he is not it's spokesman,
and any claims that he is "from the Internet" made by him, or a third party are groundless.

Only these people officially represent the Internet. And David Mc Girr is not in that picture.
Claims that he is the portly, angry looking red-head in the middle are groundless.

In summary he has merely taken up residence in various corners of the Internet,
and physically built himself into the code. He can not be dislodged.
As a result "The Internet" (i.e. everyone else) should keep their distance from him,
and never refer to him in the third person.

On a side note David Mc Girr is currently being pursued by the Miller Brewing Company for the "ludicrous use" of the phrase "it's miller time" and is embroiled in a class action suit with English departments from a number of Universities for claiming that he "invented the question mark" and his frequent demanding royalties from signs (or other public information) containing the symbol.

I have it on DVD. And made it a point to walk around where April O'Neil's apartment was supposed to be in the West Village when I moved here.

You know what would be really funny? If everyone dressed up like a different Newsvine popular kid and walked around and acted like them, and they all called it a big prank.

I wish I could attend, but living in the Seattle area makes it difficult.

Here's a funny side note on Newsvine in general, though:

Okay. I go to the Northwest Science Fiction Convention for three days this week. I have a few sci-fi books out there, a magazine, a couple of websites, and I am actually COVERING the convention for the mag.

                            Fine.

So, a few people recognize me. Not many. They all say, 'Yeah, I've seen some of your articles at that Newsvine place.' No one knew about anything else, not the books, the mag, anything.

Just Newsvine. Go figure. (scratches head and laughs)
